On friday i was able to hang out with Hanna, the marketing lady. It was fun, but because it was the end of the season there was not much to do. Saturday i had to miss because i had to go to Maine to sign some documents for a car loan.
Sustainability -- Marketing creates financial sustainability because it spreads the word out about the mountain. People would not know about the mountain if they didnt market it.
Service - There is not much of a service to people except for when they market events and sales. It creates a way for the public to know about whats going on
Safety - There is not much to do with safety when marketing. The only thing i can think of is that they create the snow report so people can know how the skiing is and not come on certain days if they dont have the skills required to ski ice or mash potatoes
The guest - They get benefited because they get to learn about things going on at the mountain
The employee - They also learn things about the mountain through marketing, but because marketing gets skier visits, they are able to have a job
The owner - They get the benefit of skier visits. With a good marketing campaign, lots of skiers will come to the mountain.

Burke mountain maintenance
On friday i got to work with Jack in the maintenance shop and i helped do an oil change and lube job on a groomer. On Saturday i hung out with Tim in the morning and then did some guest service things in the after noon like take pictures of people with burkie the bear. i will focus my 6 questions on maintenance for this blog.
Sustainability -- The maintenance shop is environmentally sustainable because they recycle all of their used oils and any bit that gets spilled on the floor is cleaned up quickly.
Service - They keep the groomers and other equipment in good repair so that the mountain can offer groomed trails. With out regular maintenance the groomers would fail and not work.
Safety - This is a big thing in the maintenance shop because you are working with a lot of dangerous tools. They require eye protection when working with tools and proper footwear because the floor is very slippery from the snow melting off the groomers.
The consumer benefits because with out proper maintenance on equipment the machinery would break and then the snow surface would be worse than it already is this year.
The employee benefits because its a year round job. they must repair other machinery like tractors and chainsaws in the summer.
The owner benefits because with proper maintenance repair costs will be lowered, but they do spend a big chunk of money in maintenance.

First weekend at Burke
The first weekend at burke i had to work at the dog sled dash. Basically i just sold t-shirts all day and helped direct people where they needed to go. It was all part of the special events department.
Service - Special events creates a unique service for customers. They break up the every day skiing and add new things into the mix to keep interest in the ski area. They also bring people who may not ski to the mountain to get their money.
Safety - There was not really any safety factors that substantial with this event. They did have a mobile medic tent and they had road crossing which they took alot of safety precautions with, but other than that it was not a very dangerous event.
Sustainability - Special events help create financial sustainability because it can generate new revenues and helps bring people who may not ski or snowboard to come spend their money. It also increases skier visits for the day because people want to see the events from the hill. The dog sled race did not really help with that though because it was held a few miles from the mountain.
The guest - They get the benefit of seeing something different besides just skiing. It creates a break from the every day skiing activities and they can interact with a different crowed of people
The Employee - Events create a super stressful situation and they must be up super early, but when the event is completed everyone is super happy. It also helps give some employees who may not work a lot more hours.
The owner - Creates a new stream of revenue for the owner and also helps keep guests happy. Events usually attract a lot of people who may not normally go to the mountain.

Final Day at bretton
For the final day at bretton woods we basically just skied around for the morning and went tubing after lunch. We also had a conversation with James on how the rotation went and what we would have liked to have done, basically just debriefed on the first half of the semester. In the morning Cory and I got a private tour of Bretton Woods from Doll face, Sean Doll. I am going to offer my 6 questions about private tours.
1. Sustainability - Private tours can create another stream of revenue, which helps the company become financially sustainable. It can also make a guest feel more comfortable with the mountain and want to keep coming back.
2. Service - Private tours is a complete guest service, they are there to service a need for the guest. They go around and show people the ins and outs of the mountain and get tailored to peoples personal skills.
3. Safety - Because people are getting a tour, they become more familiar with the mountain. When they are more familiar with the mountain they are less likely to go down the wrong trail that may be to hard for them where they may get hurt.
4. Consumer/Guest - These benefit the guest by showing them around the mountain and making them feel like they are a part of the local scene.
5. Employee - It creates another job for someone to fill.
6. Owner - Creates another stream of revenue and makes people want to come back because they enjoyed their time.

Bretton woods Rentals
Over this past weekend i spent my time in rentals and had a pretty good time. It was pretty slow on Friday, but Saturday had a good turn out.
1. Financial sustainability - Creates away for people to enjoy skiing with out having to purchase the expensive equipment. It also creates a new stream of revenue for the mountain
2. Service - like sustainability it makes it so customers can enjoy skiing with out having to buy the expensive equipment. They also have performance demos so people who travel dont have to bring their skis or if they want to try out newer gear.
3. Safety - They provide safe equipment for people to use because they are always doing release checks on the bindings to make sure they release at the proper torque.
4. The consumer gets the benefit of being able to use the resorts equipment for a relatively inexpensive fee and they don't have to go out and spend the 800 dollars or more to buy skis and other gear. It is also great for beginners to try skiing before they go out and invest in their own gear.
5. Rentals provides a large amount of jobs for employees because of the huge rush in the morning. They have to have alot of people on staff to account for the big rushes. The employees also get to have fun and interact with the guests which is always a good job.
6. The owner gets an added stream of revenue. They also get the added skier visits because beginners are coming with out gear so they need some to rent.

Bretton woods Guest services
Over the weekend i worked in guest services and it was fun. It is not really my most favorite department, but it was a good experience.
Sustainability - Guest services works with people to help them with their problems. They help create a friendly place and a piece of mind because they work to resolve issues. This helps guests feel better and makes them want to come back, thus helping with financial sustainability.
Service - Guest services is a service, hence the name. They work with guests to get tickets and assist them with other issues like getting them shuttles, helping with injuries, giving guests information about the resort etc.
Safety - Guest services is a place for information to safely make your way around the mountain. For beginners they will help map out what trails to stay on so that they do not end up going down a black diamond trail. They also are a central hub for injured guests to go to get medical attention.
Customer/Guest - Guest services is centralized around helping the guests. They will do anything in their power to make the guest feel welcomed and help them have a memorable stay.
Employee/associate - Guest services adds to the big picture of making guests happy and increasing skier visits. If skier visits are increased then there will be more jobs and people can work overtime. They also work with other employees in other departments to make sure a customer is happy.
Owner - The owner gets the piece of mind that their guests are happy. happy guests = more money being spent. A good guest services department will make a customer feel good about the resort and want to keep coming back to spend their money.

Bretton woods Lift Ops
Over the weekend i spent the time with Lift Ops at bretton woods. Well i spent some time there because most of the day i spent with the lift mechanics, but you can still call that lift operations.
Sustainability - The lift mechanics ensure the proper running of the lifts to get maximum energy efficiency out of them, which is the whole going green thing. They also will slow lifts down on busier days, which cuts down on wear and saving money for repairs.
Service - lifts create a service to the public by bringing them up the hill, so when a mountain has nice lifts they have a better service. Also, the lift attendants ensure the proper loading of the lift and help people get on, which is a service.
Safety - Ski lifts are the biggest liability that a resort has because once someone leaves the ground they are your responsibility and if they get hurt its your ass. To mitigate the risk involved with ski lifts there are many safety regulations that are required from many people such as, resort standards and procedures, national standards ANSI, government standards and insurance company regulations. all of the regulations ensure a safe ride to the top of the mountain.
Consumer/Guest - Lift ops maintains and operates lifts safely so the guest doesn't have to walk to the top of the hill and they can feel safe while riding. There would be a lot less skiers if they had to walk up the hill
Employee/Associate - Lift ops gives them a job. Bretton woods takes good care of their lift operators and mechanics. They don't over work them and make sure that they are always comfortable. Plus they always get candy.
Owner - Skier visits. With out nice lifts skier visits would be down. Lift Ops ensures the quality of the lifts to make sure people have a good experience. Yes they cost a lot of money, but in the resort industry you have to spend a lot of money to make any sort of profit.
